It’s time for this month’s second SHEBOSS VIP Freebie. I put this release to the vote of my wonderful followers in an Instagram poll. It was a draw between the Goal Setting Planner Insert and the Self Care Planner Insert. Since it was a draw I thought I would release the free Goal Setting Planner Insert. Now that the hype of the New Year is long gone it is fairly common for people to fall off the goal setting track. I though this would therefore be the perfect opportunity to help us all get back on the goal getting bandwagon.
READY, SET, GOAL GET…..
I don’t know about you but I am natural goal setter. I love setting goals. It gives me something to constantly aim towards and in true INFJ style it helps me to feel fulfilled and accomplished in my life. If I don’t have something to work towards I often feel frustrated and struggle to find true meaning in the day to day things that I do. In my day to day life almost everything needs to have a purpose, at least that is how my brain sees things.
MY GOAL SETTING TIPS…..
I am by no means an expert when it comes to setting goals. I have tried and tested lots of different goal setting methods. Sometimes I literally scribble my goals down onto a piece of paper and that is where they will forever more stay. Other time I make a point of writing them up neatly and making a place for them in my planner. No matter how I write them up I always stick to the same goal setting structure as detailed below.
USE THE SMART GOAL SETTING TECHNIQUE
I have used the SMART goal setting technique ever since I discovered it. I find it helps me to really think about the goal and whether it is truly achievable. After all, who wants to set goals that are not achievable. SMART is an acronym that stands for;
S – Specific – What specifically do you want to achieve?
M – Measureable – Why is your goal important? How will you measure success?
A – Achievable – How will you achieve your goal? What actions will you take?
R – Relevant – How is this goal relevant to you? What will achieving this goal mean once it’s achieved?
T – Time – Decide a deadline by which you would like this goal to be achieved.
When your goals can answer all 5 of these question points you can be sure that they are achievable.
BREAK YOUR GOALS DOWN
Sometimes a big goal can be overwhelming. Breaking goals down into bitesize goals can make achieving your goals seem easier. I like to break my goals down into smaller, more manageable goals. I treat each bitesize goal as a task. As I accomplish each task I can tick it off and track my progress. I try to break my goals down into at least 6 manageable goals with no more than one task to a goal.
IMPLEMENT A REVIEW PROCESS
Admittedly I never used to use a review process when it came to goal setting. The younger version of me knew exactly what I wanted and how to get it. I didn’t have the same commitments that I have now and my goals were always at the forefront of my brain. Fast forward to adulthood and I am now married, with two beautiful boys. We are home owners. I am a business owner and we are now “adulting”.
Although my goals are still important to me I have a lot of other things that are more important to me. Truth be told, if I don’t write my goals down and review them often enough I just forget about them. This has happened in the past. It isn’t until I start feeling frustrated and irritated that I realise that I have lost sight of my goals.
A review process doesn’t need to be lengthy or tedious. It just needs to include a few pointers to help to ascertain where you are in the process of achieving your goal. A goal review process will help you to identify the next steps to moving forward. It will also help you to see if you need any addition help or support from your nearest and dearest in order to achieve your goals.
MY GOAL REVIEW PROCESS…..
My review process if pretty simple. It consists of the following;
- a recap of my goal
- what stage or action point I am currently on
- a list of accomplishments/progress made to date
- the next 3 action points to be completed
I also ask myself the following;
- what is holding me back?
- how can I power through these hold backs?
- what stumbling blocks do I need to overcome?
- how can I overcome these stumbling blocks?
Completing a Goal Review Sheet always helps to reset my focus and get me back on track. I have had instances where I this process has made me realise that the goal is no longer relevant and so I scrap it altogether.
